This Week In Hive Mind
Mary has no idea what the Met Gala is and Cousin Eddie is not as great as you remember.
I spent the week trying to decide how I feel about The Undoing. I think I maybe hate it? But am impressed by Hugh Grant’s performance in it? Just as some movies would make better series, some series would make better movies. Such is the case with The Undoing which has about five unnecessary hours, most of them spent on closeups of Nicole Kidman’s eyeballs.
At the finale’s disappointing conclusion I found myself wishing I had watched Paddington 2 instead. It features Hugh Grant’s finest performance (though Music And Lyrics should be slept on less.)
When I wasn’t confused-watching HBO miniseries, I was watching Christmas Vacation to discuss it with Eli for our Hive Mind episode.
Guys, I don’t know how to tell you this, but that movie is not good, and I’m convinced anyone who loves it loves it for the memories surrounding it and not for the content of the movie itself. And that’s fine! The holidays are about coziness and comfort and memories and returning to things that bring you joy. And if Christmas Vacation is one of those happy memories for you, you should watch it as many times as you want.
Just, please, don’t make me watch it with you.
I also watched an episode and a half of The Bachelorette for Trash Talk with Irene.
The moment when Tayshia excuses herself to cry in a broom closet because she’s so touched by Ben’s surprise nudity was a perfect emblem of the insanity that has kept me watching for a decade.
Talking about this season with Irene, and only sort of related tangents like childhood soap opera addictions and near-disaster graduation vomit episodes, is getting me through the back third of 2020.
And, of course, I watched the fourth episode of The Real Housewives Of Salt Lake City .
You can read my recap of Episode 4 here.
If you need a refresher on Episode 3, check out our latest Green Room episode:
And if you’re in a hurry we have a 15 minute video recap:
It wouldn’t be a 2020 experience if one of our mics wasn’t bugging out, right?
Stuff You Might Like From Around The Internet
As ambivalent as I am about The Undoing, I enjoyed and appreciated Hugh Grant’s Fresh Air interview. Terry Gross seems to love Paddington 2 just as much as the rest of us.
Binging with Babish recreates the Ben Wyatt calzones. I’ve only made a few of the Babish recipes but have watched almost all of the videos. Food, movies, and TV all share the base of my hierarchy of needs triangle, so the series hits me in all the right places.
John Early tweeted about his friend Nicole Spiezio who used to pretend to conduct the Real Housewives score which, 1. made me laugh to the point of tears, and 2. made me think about how much I love John Early and Search Party so now I’m rewatching Search Party.
